Biomass industry ‘can lead Scottish economic recovery’

The biomass industry will play a key role in driving Scotland out of recession.

This is the view of first minister and Scottish National Party (SNP) leader Alex Salmond, who told STV that low carbon industries could create 130,000 jobs by 2020.

He explained that the SNP has approved 42 different renewable energy projects in the last four years, as he took a tour of the biomass plant being built in Fife.

This particular plant, which will power the Tullis Russell paper mill, is benefitting from £8.1 million of government support, and Mr Salmond told the news provider it is vital that Scotland uses its energy expertise for projects such as this.

"We know that to re-industrialise Scotland we need our old and new industries, our old and new skills to be working together to make Scotland better," he said.

Plans for a large biomass plant in Leith are under consideration by the Scottish authorities at the moment, with some residents expressing opposition despite the plans passing an Environmental Impact Assessment.
