French business climate improves but manufacturers gloomier

French managers are increasingly upbeat on the country's business climate but are still less optimistic than in the past, particularly in the manufacturing sector, new data showed Wednesday.

The latest figures from national statistics institute INSEE show France's business climate index rose to 94 in September, up three points from August but still below its long-term average of 100.

"The business climate has improved substantially in September," Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici told France 2 television.

While confidence was generally up across the main sectors of the economy, the composite indicator for the manufacturing sector fell by one point to 97, INSEE said.

"The improvement of the business climate in industry is pausing," it said. But a separate turning-point indicator was stable, which the institute said "confirms the favourable cyclical economic outlook dynamic that has begun for two months."

The business climate index tumbled into the high 60s amid the global financial crisis but has since recovered ground and has ticked up steadily since April this year.

In September, the sub-index for retail and motor vehicles rose six points to 101, services rose four points to 93, the building industry gained one point to 93 and wholesale trade added eight points in two months to reach 96.
